Our History
- The church started as a fellowship, meeting in members’ houses. They were alternating from one member’s house to another. Then the pioneer group got a vision to look for a place to meet for Sunday worship in a typical Presbyterian setting. The pioneer group had around twenty church members.
- The congregation was formed in 2013 and sought a relationship with the Olympia presbytery of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
- The group led by Elder Henry Mbugua approached Rev. David Alger from the Presbyterian Church of the USA to help them with a place to meet and worship on Sundays. The Revered then connected them to Olympia Presbytery, they were allowed to meet at one of the PCUSA churches in Lakewood. PCUSA was also using the same venue in the morning and the group had to wait for the first service from PCUSA to the end. Rev. Alger was then appointed to be the moderator of the session. The group named the church, Presbyterian church of Lakewood.
- During the time of Rev. David Alger’s tenure as moderator, several ministers served as acting immigrant ministers, among them Rev.Wahogo, and others being invited as guests’ speakers for Sunday service only. The church later moved to Westminster church venue, located at 5236 E B STREET, TACOMA WA 98404 where they were able to meet freely in the morning.
- The session also changed and new members were incorporated. At this venue, Rev. G. Nyaga joined in and was the community minister until the time of his death in 2021. The church had one year without a minister, and after an extended and thorough search and prayers, God answered their prayers and Rev. Joseph Ole Kisang’a joined in June 2022. The congregation is governed by the Session as by the Book of Order: Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A).
It is evident that God has remembered us as a church and has showered the congregation with tremendous growth and many blessings, among them a very able and visionary leadership team (session) led by Rev. Joseph Ole Kisang’a and in lieu of the same, it has outgrown the capacity of Westminster church location.
